Slight optimization (Ha!).

The real reason: for a DOM element that looks like this:
<li id="a"><ul></ul></li>
It appears that (with at least some versions of) Safari 3, this:
$('a').down('UL')
returns undefined. Stupid stupid stupid stupid. That's an hour tracking
this down that I will never get back.
